PROJECT OVERVIEW

Blackhole KTV is a karaoke entertainment business located in Surabaya, Indonesia. I was hired as a Freelance Graphic Designer to create a menu that would showcase the available food and drink options and help customers make informed choices. Before the client came to me, they had prepared some visual styles or prompts that they wanted me to follow. They had opted for black or any dark colour as the main background for the menu, and they wanted a font that’s easily seen in the dark.

The Journey

The journey involved constant problem-solving through various design stages, and refinement of high-fidelity prototypes before launching new app features. This approach was essential to the project's success and its ongoing impact on the home building industry.

With the successful launch of the Build Buddy app on IOS and Android, my responsibilities extended to post-launch activities. I took charge of designing new features and addressing issues identified through product and user testing, ensuring continuous improvement and optimal performance.

First Iteration

Initially, I proposed a menu for Blackhole KTV with red and black as the main visual colors, and a clean and simple layout. However, the client wanted the headings to be more noticeable in the dark, and differentiated for each beverage category. Additionally, they asked me to incorporate more branding into the design, to ensure that customers would immediately recognize that the menu was from Blackhole KTV. Finally, they wanted to change the structure of the menu, which impacted the overall menu layout.

Second and Final Iteration

To meet the client's requests, I made several revisions to the menu design. I incorporated brighter and bolder colors for the headings, and reorganized the menu structure to reflect the requested changes. I also added more branding elements to the design, to reinforce the Blackhole KTV identity and ensure that customers would recognize the menu as coming from the business.

Final Result

Through adeptly integrating client feedback and implementing essential modifications, I succeeded in crafting a menu design that not only catered to their requirements but also authentically embodied the essence of the Blackhole KTV brand.

Fast forward to 2024, my designed menu continues to be an integral part of Blackhole KTV's operations. Their sustained success is evidenced by the recent expansion into the vibrant city of Jakarta, where they've established a new branch in the South.

Reflection

Reflecting on this project, I feel grateful for the opportunity to work as a graphic designer and contribute to the branding and visual identity of a business. It was an exciting challenge to create a menu design that effectively showcased the available food and drink options while also aligning with the Blackhole KTV brand.

Throughout the design process, I learned the importance of collaboration and communication with clients. The initial proposal for the menu design was not accepted, but instead of becoming discouraged, I listened to the client’s feedback and incorporated their requests into the revisions. This allowed me to create a final design that met the client’s expectations and reflected their vision for their business.

Another key takeaway from this project was the importance of attention to detail. Every aspect of the design, from the colors and typography to the layout and structure, had to be carefully considered and executed to create a cohesive and visually appealing final product.

Overall, I am proud of the work I produced for Blackhole KTV and believe that the redesigned menu will be a valuable asset to their business. This project has strengthened my skills as a digital designer and reminded me of the importance of collaboration, communication, and attention to detail in creating successful designs.
